“Les Valseurs” Automaton by Alexandre Théroude, c. 1850

Depicting a waltzing couple, with wax-coated papier-mâché heads, glass eyes and original hair wigs, origi-nal silk costumes edged in lace (the lady) and soutache trim (the gentleman), on conical green grain-painted metal base with three spoked wheels, two brass plaques: “A. Theroude, Paris” and “Breveté, S.G.D.G.”, going-barrel motor and single-air cylinder movement, ht. 12 ½ in. (31.5 cm), original working condition, with wood-handled crank. Included are a modern glass dome and presentation base. – Note: An ingeniously designed mechanical toy, the movement of Théroude’s waltzing couple is achieved by a pair of driving wheels and a smaller steering wheel, fixed at an angle, that create the circular trajectory of the base. Darstellung eines walzertanzenden Paares, Köpfe aus wachsbeschichtetem Pappmaché, Glasaugen und Original-Echthaarperücken, Original-Seidenkostüme mit Spitzenbesatz (Dame) und Soutache-Besatz (Herr), auf konischem, grün gestrichenem Metallsockel mit drei Speichenrädern, zwei Messingplaketten: “A. Theroude, Paris” und “Breveté, S.G.D.G.”, Federwerkmotor und Walzenspielwerk mit 1 Melodie, Höhe 31,5 cm, Origi-nalzustand, Kurbel mit Holzgriff. Dazu gehören eine moderne Glaskuppel und ein Präsentationssockel. – Die Bewegung des Walzerpaares von Théroude wird durch ein Paar Antriebsräder und ein kleineres, schräg stehendes Vorderrad erreicht, die die kreisförmige Bahn des Sockels erzeugen.
