Reflecting Circle by Pistor & Martins, Berlin, c. 1850/60

Mirror circle, signature on the outer ring “Pistor & Martins Berlin”, opposite this signature the number “761”, original lacquered brass, the inner frame is burnished (all original), mahogany handle, diameter 10 1/5 in.; silver scales, with prism and 4 fold-out half filters, a telescope, a focusable reading magnifier, optically and mechanically in good condition (perfectly functional), original mahogany case with inscription from 1880 (by the owner) in the lid. – Instead of the 60-degree scale of the sextant, the full-circle sextant has a full circle and is used to determine the angular distances of astronomical objects. This improvement was introduced by the mathematician and astronomer Tobias Mayer in 1755. – One of the rare examples of this mirror instrument is located in the Astronomical-Physical Cabinet in the Orangery in Kassel.

Spiegelkreis, Signatur auf dem äußeren Ring “Pistor & Martins Berlin”, gegenüber dieser Signatur die Nummer “761”, original zaponiertes Messing, der innere Rahmen ist brüniert (alles original) , Mahagoni Griff, Durchmesser 26 cm; Silberskalen, mit Prisma und 4 ausklappbaren Halbfiltern, ein Teleskop, eine fokussierbare Ableselupe, optisch und mechanisch guter Zustand (perfekte Funktion), Originalkasten aus Mahagoni mit Inschrift von 1880 (Besitzer) im Deckel. – Der Vollkreis-Sextant hat statt der 60-Grad-Skala des Sextanten einen Vollkreis und dient zur Bestimmung von Winkelabständen astronomischer Objekte. Diese Verbesserung führte der Mathematiker und Astronom Tobias Mayer 1755 ein. – Eines der seltenen Exemplare dieses Spiegelinstruments befindet sich im Astronomisch-Physikalischen Kabinett in der Orangerie in Kassel.
