Nicholas Lane’s Pocket 3-inch Terrestrial and Celestial Pocket Globes, c. 1825

Made up of twelve colored gores on plaster spheres, with metal pins at both poles, in fish-skin-covered pasteboard cases with red-painted rims and two sets of twelve hand-colored gores and two polar calottes on the inside. – 1) Earth globe, c. 1825, with cartouche: “Lane’s Improved Globe, London”, continents out-lined in green, monsoons marked in the China Sea and Indian Ocean, South Africa designated “Country of the Hotentot”, Tasmania still as “Dimens Land”, the place of Cook’s death is named Owhyhee and noted “Here C. Cook was Killed. 14 Febr. 1779”, the concave interior of the case inscribed with the celestial charts of the northern and southern skies and symbols of the zodiac, case with 3 brass hook-and-eye catches. – And: 2) Celestial globe, unmarked, probably pre-1800, external projection, hand-colored gores depicting the starry sky as seen from the outside, with pictorial representation of the constellations, case depicting the sky in geocentric projection, with one (of two) hook-and-eye catches.

Nicholas Lane’s Miniatur-Erd- und -Himmelsgloben
Taschengloben, Durchmesser jeweils 75 mm, mit Fischhaut überzogene Pappmaché-Gehäuse mit rot bemaltem Rändern. 12 kolorierte Kupferstiche auf Gips, Metallzapfen jeweils an beiden Polen, Inneres der Gehäuse mit 2 Sets von 12 handkolorierten Kupferstichen und 2 Polarkalotten. 1) Erdglobus, um 1825, bezeichnet “Lane’s Improved Globe, London”, Kontinente in Grün umrissen, Monsune im Chinesischen Meer und dem Indischen Ozean markiert, Tasmanien noch beschriftet mit Dimens Land, der Ort von Cooks Tod ist mit Owhyhee benannt und beschriftet mit “Here C. Cook was Killed. 14 Febr. 1779”, Südafrika beschriftet mit “Country of the Hotentot”. Das konkave Innere des Gehäuses mit den Himmelskarten des nördlichen und südlichen Himmels und Symbolen des Tierkreises versehen, Gehäuse mit 3 Haken- und Ösen-Verschlüssen aus Messing. – Und: 2) Himmelsglobus, unbezeichnet, vermutlich vor 1800, Außenprojektion, Handkolorierung, Darstellung des Sternenhimmels von außen gesehen, mit bildlicher Darstellung der Sternbilder, Gehäuse mit Darstellung des Himmels in geozentrischer Projektion, mit einem von zwei Haken- und Ösen-Verschlüssen.
