Miethe Archive Three-Color Negatives and Three-Color Projector

1) The negative archive was stored at the Technical University in Berlin. It is unclear which negatives were destroyed during the war, and during the postwar era of the 1960s, when the archive was considered obsolete. For the remaining archive of approx. 800 negatives, it was the beginning of a second life as it increasingly underwent scholarly research in students’ exams and theses. This was also accompanied by the study of Miethe’s numerous publications and thus his significance as a color pioneer. Along with the three-color projector, 37 original three-color negatives and three original slides measuring 89.4 x 238.5 mm are available. The selection was based on Miethe’s following areas of interest: Berlin, flowers, a lady who is always shown with a parasol, flora, glaciers, children, farm work, landscapes, porcelain painters (his first photographs, Miethe Archive No. 36), cities, animals, and forests. These themes are present in the 40 originals, and all are in technically correct condition. Nine of the negatives still bear the original Miethe Archive number. Now, the possibility of a third life for the negatives arises: Firstly, for all exhibitions of color photography; secondly, if we look at all the color-stable pictures printed by the Weller publishing house from 1906 onwards, and assuming that not all possibilities were exhausted in printing, Miethe negatives come very close to the ideal thanks to their form of sensitisation. After more than 100 years, the modern age of digital technology may feel challenged to make up for any missing subtleties in terms of color fidelity without exaggeration or physiological effects. – And: 2) The three-color projector for slides from Miethe three-color negatives 9 x 24 cm (length/width/height 67 x 54 x 38 cm) was built c. 1980–90 in all-metal by a technical college workshop based on the Goerz three-color projector. It contains individually controllable lamps (functioning), three heat filters, three double condensers, two fans (the motor runs, the transmission belts need replacing), and a mount for the original Goerz three-color slide holder (one of each of the three versions is included). Projection lenses: Isco-Göttingen Projar 6/350 mm no. 352242 for the middle green channel, the lenses no. 371754 (blue channel) and no. 371745 (red channel) are each adjustable in the x and y axes (the same regulation used by the famous Goerz device).

1) Das Negativ-Archiv lagerte in der Technischen Hochschule in Berlin. Es ist unklar, welche weiteren Negative im Krieg zerstört wurden; auch sah die Nachkriegsära der 60er Jahre das Archiv als veraltet an. Für dies übernommene Rest-Archiv von etwa 800 Negativen wurde es der Beginn eines zweiten Lebens, das zunehmend eine wissenschaftliche Aufarbeitung über Studenten mittels derer Examen und Abschlußarbeiten erfuhr. Dazu kam die Beschäftigung mit der Vielzahl von Miethes Veröffentlichungen und damit seiner Bedeutung als Farbpionier. Von Miethe liegen zusammen mit dem Dreifarbenprojektor 37 Original-Drei-Farben-Negative und 3 Original-Diapositive im Format 89,4 x 238,5 mm vor. Die Auswahl ging von folgenden Interessengebieten Miethes aus (in alphabetischer Reihenfolge): Berlin, Blumen, Dame mit Sonnenschirm als Erkennungsmuster, Flora, Gletscher, Kinder, Landarbeit, Landschaft, Porzellanmaler (seine ersten Aufnahmen, Miethe-Archiv Nr. 36), Städte, Tiere und Wald. Diese Themen sind in den 40 Originalen vorhanden, und alle sind in technisch korrektem Zustand. Neun der Negative haben noch die Original-Miethe-Archivnummer. Nun liegt die Möglichkeit für ein drittes Leben der Negative vor: zum einen für alle Ausstellungen zur Farbphotographie, zum anderen betrachtet man all die gedruckten farbstabilen Bilder ab 1906 des Weller-Verlages und setzt man voraus, daß dort im Druck noch nicht alle Möglichkeiten erschöpft waren, so kommen doch Miethe-Negative dank ihrer Sensibilisierungsform dem Ideal sehr nahe. Für eventuell fehlende Feinheiten mag sich nach über 100 Jahren die Moderne der Digitaltechnik herausgefordert fühlen, was sie bisher an Farbtreue ohne Übertreibung oder physiologische Effekte geleistet hat. – Und: 2) Der Dreifarben-Projektor für Diapositive von Miethe-Drei¬farben-Negativen 9 x 24 cm (Länge/Breite/Höhe 67 x 54 x 38 cm) wurde in Anlehnung an den Goerz-Dreifarbenprojektor um 1980–90 in Ganzmetall von der Fachwerkstatt einer technischen Hochschule gebaut. Er enthält einzeln ansteuerbare Lampen (funktionieren), 3 Wärmeschutzfilter, 3 Doppelkondensoren, 2 Ventilatoren (Motor läuft, Pesen sind zu erneuern) und die Halterung für Original-Goerz-Dreifarbendia-Halter (von den 3 Varianten ist jeweils eine mit dabei). Projektionsobjektive: Isco-Göttingen Projar 6/350 mm Nr. 352242 für den mittleren Grün-Kanal, die Objektive Nr. 371754 (Blau-Kanal) und Nr. 371745 (Rot-Kanal) sind jeweils in x- und y-Richtung justierbar (dieselbe Regelung wie bei dem berühmten Goerz-Gerät).
