Rare “Interchangeable Gloria Polytype” Musical Box by Allard, c. 1890

No. 9558, with four six-air cylinders, two combs of 55 and 54 teeth (both complete, extreme treble tooth of left comb replaced), twin zither attachments, nickel-plated mechanism, double-spring motor, safety-check beneath the bedplate, tune-indicator, tune-selector and speed-regulator, in veneered and banded case with original finish, inlaid brass and mother-of-pearl motif on the lid, tune-sheet and cylinder storage drawer in plinth, cylinders 13 ½ in. (34 cm), overall 33 in. (84 cm), cylinders cleaned, movement in good playing condition albeit a couple of dampers in need of adjustment, four small sections of veneer loss to front of case. – Note: The so-called Polytype was a later development in the production of cylinder musical boxes, in which individual tracks (or in this case individual cylinders) are pinned with distinctly different musical effects. Cylinder no. 10213 features sublime harmony, no. 10215 piccolo and no. 10216 tremolo arrangements, while no. 10218 has a mixture of all three. As might be expected for a musical box with stylistic diversity, the program is also appropriately representative, incorporating operatic motifs by Verdi, Wagner and Bizet, ballads (including “Robin Adair”), popular airs, dances and three American titles. – Literature: Graham Webb, “The Cylinder Music Box Handbook”, p. 34; W.J.G. Nr. 9558, mit vier Walzen für jeweils 6 Melodien, zwei Kämmen mit 55 und 54 Zähnen (beide komplett, äußerster Diskantzahn des linken Kammes ersetzt), zwei Zitheraufsätzen, vernickeltem Mechanismus, Doppelfederwerkmotor, Sicherheitskontrolle unter der Grundplatte, Melodienanzeiger, Melodienwählhebel und Geschwindigkeitsregler, in furniertem und mit Bändern versehenem Gehäuse mit Original-Lackierung, eingelegtem Messing- und Perlmuttmotiv auf dem Deckel, Melodienblätter und Walzenschublade im Sockel, Walzenbreite 34 cm, Gehäusebreite 84 cm, Walzen gereinigt, Mechanik in gut spielendem Zustand, einige Dämpfer müßten reguliert werden, vier kleine Abschnitte am Furnier fehlen an der Vorderseite des Gehäuses. – Der sogenannte Polytype war eine spätere Entwicklung in der Produktion von Zylinderspieldosen, bei der einzelne Spuren (oder in diesem Fall einzelne Walzen) mit deutlich unterschiedlichen musikalischen Effekten versehen sind. Die Walze Nr. 10213 ist mit erhabener Harmonie, die Nr. 10215 mit Piccolo und die Nr. 10216 mit Tremolo ausgestattet, während die Nr. 10218 eine Mischung aus allen dreien aufweist. Wie es sich für eine Spieldose mit stilistischer Vielfalt gehört, ist auch das Programm entsprechend repräsentativ und enthält Opernmotive von Verdi, Wagner und Bizet, Balladen (darunter “Robin Adair”), populäre Lieder, Tänze und drei amerikanische Titel. – Literatur: Graham Webb, “The Cylinder Music Box Handbook”, S. 34; W.J.G.
