Duplex Typewriter Co, De Moines, Iowa. Serial no. 242, nickel-plated exhibition model, raised cast Duplex lettering. Following the U.S. patent no. 297086 by Henry Orpen from 1884, Adolphus Sylvester Dennis, Cleveland, Ohio, designed this American upstroke typewriter as an improvement with a double keyboard for typing two characters at the same time on 2 x 50 keys left and right of the center of the keyboard. The idea was to speed up the writing process by pressing two keys on both sides simultaneously. However, this proved impracticable and, therefore, the machine was not a commercial success, but this made it a superb rarity! – Literature: 1) P. Nach dem US-Patent-Nr. 297086 von Henry Orpen, datiert 15. April 1884, entwickelte Adolphus Sylvester Dennis, Cleveland, Ohio, diese amerikanische Unteranschlagmaschine. Grundidee war, die Schreibgeschwindigkeit zu verbessern, indem man auf einem links und rechts angebrachten doppelten Tastenfeld gleichzeitig zwei Tasten drücken konnte. Dies erwies sich aber als unpraktikabel, deshalb war ihr kein Verkaufserfolg vergönnt, was ihr heute höchsten Seltenheitswert beschert. – Literatur: 1) P.
