"Le Diocinescope" Film Viewer, 1899 onwards
Huet & Daubresse, France. Extremely rare film viewer for 35 mm wide film material. First time the stepping mecha- nism, which puts strain on the film perforation, is not used for film transport, image fusion through continuous film transport is achieved by a rotating lens system around a Dove prism for use in daylight, works! (optical parts un- damaged, but for continuous operation that is attractive to the public, the axis bearing needs mechanical improve- ment). Driven by hand crank, switchable for reverse transport. Spool size for 10 m film, focusable double-eyed viewing magnifiers (lens system must be cleaned inside), on the back: opening for inserting a ground glass screen, with adjustable reflex mirror. Black precious wood case with floral decoration (with small cracks due to age), height 36,5 cm. – Literature: "La Nature" from December 7, 1901, and George Sadoul, "History of Film" (1948). – Rightly awarded two gold medals at the 1900 World Ex- position, it must have been a sensation to the public as a small, elegant device – here something works completely silently compared to the loud clattering projectors and there is no risk of fire from high-intensity lamps! Accord- ing to our information, only two other devices are known. This film viewer with motion compensation is the optical- scientific ancestor of (most) slow motion film cameras and (most) film editing tables.
