»Champion Velocipede« Automaton with
Black Rider by Stevens & Brown, c. 1870
Connecticut, with "EXLCR" pressed-cloth head, original paint and costume,
stamped brass "gloved" hands and booted feet, velocipede with spoked iron
wheels and open-spring motor with bell-crank for zig-zag motion as boy
pedals, length 12 in. (30 cm), with key, split seam on boy's head, paint on
velocipede worn, otherwise good original working condition.
Patented in February 1870, Stevens & Brown's "Champion Velocipede" was
offered for sale by Althof Bergman in several variations, including the
scarce African American version seen here.
