Whistling Automaton by
Henry Phalibois, c. 1900
With papier-mâché character head, blue threaded eyes with
articulated "dancing" eyelids, mohair lashes and blonde mohair wig. On circular velvet-covered base containing
the large going-barrel movement with intermittent stop/start, bellows, whistle and
cams. The figure whistles two lifelike tunes in two settings:
continuously and pausing for a few moments between tunes.
In original blue velvet suit
and beret, height 33 in. (84 cm),
with key. Good working order, a rare and iconic
model!
