Early, previously unrecorded model of a Leica Torpedo viewfinder, spotted $13,730.
KÖLN, GERMANY — Auction Team Breker’s May 13 auction brought 465 lots of Office- Antiques, Telephones, Photo- graphica, Film, Science & Tech- nology and Mechanical Music Steam Engines from the Eigh- teenth to the Twentieth Centu- ries, resulting in $547,500 in total sales. The top lot was a rare circa 1890 mechanical f lute, “Orchestrion Ehrlich’s Musik Automat,” made by Paul Ehrlich of Leipzig. The coin- operated mechanical f lute housed its Ariston discs and pipes in an inlaid walnut case with detailed architectural dec- oration, and was the only

Following this in price was a Telefunken quenched spark transmitter and detector receiver (eight parts in total), made circa 1918 by Siemens & Halske, Berlin, which operated from 1847 to 1966, and sold for $20,590.

viewfinder, made circa 1930-31 by Leica and the earliest form of this instrument known. It was not recorded in James L. Lager’s illustrated history of the manufacturer, and showed rare, previously unseen fea- tures. The viewfinder included its original box and was bid to $13,730. A much earlier and far more elaborate seafaring instrument also found favor, an Islamic, engraved brass astro- labe dated to the Eighteenth or
Nineteenth Century. Probably made in Syria, the astrolabe was heavily decorated with zodiac signs, f loriate motifs, Arabic inscriptions and a nee- dle in the shape of a dragon’s head. Sold with its original pro- tective pouch, the astrolabe shone at $8,920.
