Rare Demonstration Zoetrope for Illustrating
»Persistence of Vision«, c. 1870
With 11 in. (28 cm), painted metal drum on mahogany base, connected with brass spindle to turned walnut pedestal base, height 15 in. (38 cm), with base design and strip depicting a Watt-type beam engine. The unusual design and the costly construction of the base in solid wood suggest that this zoetrope was built as a piece of demonstration apparatus for a college, society or scientific institution. – Exceptionally rare!
